Over 62,000 people had cast their ballots by 12:00 p.m. in today’s nationwide elections, the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) said.
The commission reported that 62,083 voters, or 21.05 percent of eligible voters, had participated by midday. This included 28,838 women and 33,245 men, while 232,793 people, or 78.95 percent, had not yet voted. Since 10:00 a.m., 20,921 additional voters had cast their ballots.
Voting, originally scheduled to start at 8:00 a.m., was delayed at some stations. The ECM confirmed that polling at all stations began at 9:32 a.m., with ballots set to remain open until 4:00 p.m.
A total of 294,876 people are eligible to vote, including 144,506 women and 150,370 men.
The ECM is overseeing the local council elections, Women’s Development Committee (WDC) elections, and a national referendum. The referendum asks citizens whether they support the President ratifying the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution Bill, passed by parliament on 10 February 2026. The amendment proposes to align parliamentary elections with presidential elections and revise the method for calculating parliamentary terms.
