The government is taking steps to resolve logistical difficulties and delays in unloading imported goods at the Malé Commercial Harbour, Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel has announced.

The statement follows rising concerns from local business communities over growing backlogs at the nation’s primary maritime entry point. Minister Khaleel linked the port congestion to wider global instability, noting that the ongoing conflict in the Middle East is affecting international supply chains and posing challenges to the Maldivian economy.

To maintain the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities, including food, fuel, and medicines, the government has initiated talks with partner nations. Officials report that these discussions are progressing, ensuring that critical goods remain available in the Maldivian market without shortages.

In addition to essential supplies, the government is addressing disruptions in key economic sectors. Challenges faced by the tourism and construction industries, particularly in sourcing materials and equipment—are being mitigated by connecting local businesses with companies in friendly countries.

Regarding the harbour specifically, Minister Khaleel stated that Maldives Ports Limited and other relevant authorities are working collaboratively to resolve operational difficulties. Coordinated efforts are underway to restore efficiency and reduce delays at the country’s main economic hub.
