Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed has stated that the government is closely monitoring the supply and price movements of 164 essential products in the Maldivian market.

The update was provided during a press conference held by the Crisis Committee, established to assess and mitigate the impact of the ongoing Middle East conflict on the Maldives. The minister said the government is working in close coordination with local importers to stay informed on supply chain conditions.

He noted that importers have raised concerns over heavy congestion at the main commercial harbour, which has been identified as a key challenge. The government is taking steps to address the issue in order to ensure the smooth flow of goods.

The minister highlighted that, since the start of the conflict, the supply of essential commodities has remained stable and well managed, with no shortages reported. Items such as fuel, gas, rice, sugar and flour continue to be available without disruption.

He added that maintaining uninterrupted access to essential goods has been a priority from the outset, with efforts focused on assessing potential impacts on the public, businesses and the wider economy, while taking timely action.

In addition to monitoring current market conditions, the government is also exploring alternative sourcing options and supply routes to strengthen resilience. Ongoing discussions are being held to expand imports from key partner countries including India, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand.
