The Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced that the swearing-in ceremony for councillors elected in the Local Council Election held on 4 April will take place on 17 May 2026.
Assistant Director at LGA Mohamed Shaafiu confirmed to MV+ that the date aligns with the expiry of the current councillors’ five-year term.
“The term of the current council members expires on May 16. Therefore, the swearing-in ceremony is going to be held on May 17,” he said.
The ceremony date was determined based on the Decentralization Act, with current councillors having been sworn in on 17 May 2021.
While councillors will take the oath, members of the elected island Women’s Development Committees (WDCs) will instead sign a declaration during the ceremony.
The 4 April elections saw the selection of 626 island council and 52 city council members, alongside an equal number of WDC.
