Bangladesh High Commission Marks Independence Day with Diplomatic Reception in Malé

The High Commission of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in the Maldives marked Bangladesh’s Great Independence and National Day 2026 with a diplomatic reception held yesterday at JEN Maldives Malé by Shangri-La.
The event was attended by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel as chief guest, alongside cabinet ministers, members of parliament, senior government officials, diplomats, and members of the Bangladeshi community in the Maldives.
Proceedings began with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthems of Bangladesh and the Maldives.
According to the High Commission of Bangladesh, in his remarks, Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, Dr Md Nazmul Islam, paid tribute to those who contributed to the country’s independence, including the martyrs of the 1971 Liberation War, and highlighted recent political developments and ongoing efforts towards governance and reform.
The High Commissioner noted Bangladesh’s growing international role, including its contributions to United Nations peacekeeping, and outlined its ambitions on the global stage. He also emphasised the longstanding ties between Bangladesh and the Maldives, pointing to cooperation in trade, education, health and human resource development.
He further acknowledged recent high-level visits between the two countries, describing them as a milestone in bilateral relations.
In his address, Dr Abdulla Khaleel commended Bangladesh’s development progress and reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening cooperation and maintaining close relations between the two countries.
The event also featured a documentary on Bangladesh–Maldives relations, along with cultural and promotional presentations. A ceremonial cake-cutting, photo session and raffle draw were held, followed by a dinner reception.
