Minister of Finance and Planning Moosa Zameer has said that fuel and gas will remain available in the Maldives without shortages despite rising global prices linked to the conflict in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press conference held by a crisis committee formed in response to the situation, the minister outlined government measures to ensure the security of fuel and gas supplies.

Zameer said the Maldives is closely monitoring developments as ceasefire negotiations continue. He noted that while crude oil prices declined following reports of potential peace talks, the change has not yet been reflected in refined oil prices, meaning any adjustments may only be seen after Monday.

He added that with no final agreement reached in the negotiations, no significant change is expected in the currently elevated fuel prices. He noted that while there is no change in crude oil prices, refined oil prices increase.

The minister said efforts are underway to mitigate the impact of rising fuel costs on the state budget, including coordination with international partners.

“I would like to state that we are working to address the balance as the increase in fuel prices leads to a decrease in the Maldives’ [disposable] revenue. We are seeking assistance from multilateral agencies and other available sources. Therefore, I can say that for now, there will be no shortage, and fuel and gas will be supplied to the public according to the schedule without any difficulty,” he said.

The government also confirmed that supply routes have been secured from two regions to ensure continued fuel availability, while coordination with private fuel importers is ongoing.
