Sahil Ali, a man accused in connection with the killing of a woman in Malé in August 2023 has been convicted on two separate charges and sentenced to just over three years in prison, the Criminal Court said on Tuesday.

Sahil Ali, from Nilandhoo, is facing five charges related to the case. While the trial is being conducted behind closed doors, authorities have not disclosed the specific nature of the charges.

The Criminal Court confirmed that Sahil was found guilty on two counts and sentenced to three years, one month and six days in jail. No further details were provided regarding the offences for which he was convicted.

The case stems from the killing of Shiau Mohamed Saeed, whose body was discovered dismembered inside a house in Malé. The incident drew widespread attention at the time due to its severity.

According to the court, proceedings on the remaining three charges are ongoing, with the next hearing scheduled for later this month.

The court had previously stated that Sahil was initially provided with legal representation at state expense. However, the Attorney General’s Office later decided to discontinue this arrangement, citing a lack of co-operation with appointed lawyers.
