The Government of the Maldives has welcomed a ceasefire arrangement announced by the United States in the Lebanon, describing it as a positive step toward de-escalation in the region.

In a statement, the Maldivian government underscored the importance of protecting civilians and maintaining freedom of navigation to ensure the uninterrupted flow of global trade.

The government also expressed appreciation for the roles played by both Lebanon and the United States in facilitating the ceasefire.

Reaffirming its position, the Maldives said it supports all international efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability, adding that the ceasefire presents an opportunity for dialogue and diplomacy to achieve a lasting resolution to the conflict.

Although the Maldivian government did not mention it in its statement, Israel has been carrying out sustained airstrikes in Lebanon in recent months, alongside ongoing attacks in Gaza Strip, Palestine.

Last month, during a speech at the United Nations, Maldivian representatives also stopped short of naming Israel. In the address, they referred to Iran striking American bases in Gulf countries at the outset of its conflict with the US and Israel, describing it as a response to a joint US-Israeli attack on Iran on February 28.

The omission drew criticism from sections of the public and media, who questioned the government’s failure to explicitly name Israel while condemning Iran.
