Maldives Simplifies Tourist Visa Extension Process Amid Travel Disruptions

The Maldives has streamlined its tourist visa extension process, reducing approval times and documentation requirements as authorities respond to travel disruptions linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Tourists entering the Maldives on a 30-day visa on arrival can now apply for extensions through the Imuga portal under a simplified system. Approvals are expected within 48 hours, significantly shorter than the previous processing time of up to five days.

The revised procedure reduces documentation requirements from nine items to a single passport-sized photograph, reflecting a broader effort to improve service delivery within government systems. The changes were implemented through coordination between the Ministry of Homeland Security, Labour and Technology and Maldives Immigration.

Minister Ali Ihusaan indicated that the streamlined process is part of ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency in public services, while ensuring that tourists facing unexpected travel disruptions are able to extend their stays without administrative delays.

The policy adjustment comes as flight cancellations and route disruptions have affected travel plans, with some visitors required to remain in the Maldives longer than initially planned. Tourism operators had called for more flexible arrangements to manage these circumstances.

Maldives Immigration has stated that the updated process maintains existing security standards despite the reduced documentation and faster turnaround time.

Alongside these changes, the government and Visit Maldives are continuing efforts to diversify source markets, as arrivals from certain regions have been affected by the broader geopolitical situation.
