Ministry of Health Maldives has urged individuals in need of mental health support to contact the National Mental Health Helpline at 1677, which provides round-the-clock psychological first aid.
The appeal follows public criticism directed at the Maldives Police Service after the death of an 18-year-old student at a dormitory of Maldives National University earlier this week.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Ministry noted that the helpline offers immediate assistance for individuals experiencing mental health concerns. It added that efforts are ongoing to strengthen mental health services in collaboration with professionals and relevant institutions, focusing on both urgent response and long-term support systems.
The Ministry also highlighted the importance of support from families, friends and the wider community, noting that regular communication and attentive listening can help identify individuals in distress and provide timely assistance.
Concerns were raised regarding the circulation of content on social media that may negatively impact those facing mental health challenges. The public was advised to refrain from sharing distressing material, unverified information and sensitive images.
The Ministry further called on media organisations and the public to exercise caution when reporting and sharing information related to such incidents, emphasising the importance of responsible communication and supportive messaging.
It added that mental well-being requires collective responsibility and encouraged continued awareness and engagement on the issue.
