Minister of Finance & Public Enterprises Moosa Zameer has been appointed as the President of the Local Government Authority (LGA).
The authority extended its congratulations to Zameer following his appointment.
The move comes after the dissolution of the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works. The finance minister now heads the body overseeing local councils, a role previously held by the home minister.
The position of Chief Executive Officer at the LGA has also changed twice under the current administration. Dr Mariyam Zulfa initially held the post, before former Fenaka Managing Director Mohamed Nimal was appointed to the role.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that strengthening collaboration with local councils remains a priority. He has travelled to islands across the Maldives and met with their respective councils.
Earlier this month, the President reshaped the cabinet, reducing the number of ministries from 20 to 15. The changes led to the dissolution of some ministries, while others were merged under expanded mandates.
Leadership across several state-owned enterprises has also been overhauled following the 4 April elections for local councils and Women’s Development Committees, as well as the referendum seeking public opinion on whether the President should ratify the eighth amendment to the Constitution.
