UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health, Tlaleng Mofokeng, has arrived in the Maldives today on an official visit, which will continue until 7 May 2026.

According to United Nations Maldives, the visit will mark her final country mission in her capacity as the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health. The United Nations announced on Friday that the visit will run from 26 April to 7 May 2026.

During her visit, Mofokeng will assess good practices and ongoing challenges in the realisation of the right to health. The review will examine healthcare accessibility, acceptability, affordability and quality across the country. According to United Nations Maldives, the assessment will cover both physical and mental health rights.

She is scheduled to meet government authorities, civil society organisations and other stakeholders in Malé, as well as in Addu Atoll and Dhaalu Atoll, to evaluate the current situation.

“I look forward to engaging with the authorities, civil society and other stakeholders during this important visit, which will be my last as the Special Rapporteur on the right to health,” Mofokeng stated.

The visit will emphasise access to healthcare and the broader determinants of health, taking an intersectional approach with particular attention to marginalised populations. She will also visit public health facilities and other relevant institutions during her mission.

Earlier today, Mofokeng paid a courtesy call on Secretary, Multilateral, Ahmed Shiaan. Shiaan welcomed the Special Rapporteur and her engagements during the visit.

Mofokeng will present her preliminary observations at a press conference on 7 May 2026 at 13:00 local time. Attendance will be limited to accredited media, and the venue will be announced later.

Her successor will submit a comprehensive report to the UN Human Rights Council in June 2027.

Mofokeng currently serves as the UN Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health.
