The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company has announced that 95 per cent of land reclamation works in Naifaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, have been completed.
The project, which involves reclaiming 44.8 hectares of land, began in October 2025 following a visit to the island by Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
According to MTCC, overall progress of the project has reached 70 per cent, with reclamation works nearing completion. The company also confirmed that shipments of rock boulders have been delivered to the site to support revetment rock profiling works, noting that the project is currently progressing ahead of schedule.
At the time the project was awarded, 21 hectares of land were already under reclamation. The scope was later expanded as part of government plans to develop Naifaru into an urban centre.
In addition to dredging, the project includes coastal protection measures such as 1,813 metres of large rock revetment, 803 metres of rock boulder outer seawall, and 474 metres of large rock groynes aimed at protecting the reclaimed land from erosion.
Naifaru previously underwent land expansion in 2004, when 16 hectares were reclaimed to address housing needs. The current project is expected to significantly increase the island’s total land area from 55 hectares, supporting population growth and future urban development.
