Common Cold Cases Rise to 21,687 in Maldives Over Four Weeks

The Ministry of Health has reported an increase in common cold cases over the past month, with 21,687 cases recorded across the Maldives between 22 March and 18 April 2026.
Data covering epidemiological weeks 13 to 16 shows a steady rise in cases, with the highest numbers reported from the atolls.
In week 13 (22–28 March), health facilities recorded 5,185 cases, including 2,766 from the atolls and 2,419 from Malé. In week 14 (29 March–4 April), the total stood at 5,195, with 2,714 cases from the atolls and 2,481 from Malé.
Week 15 (5–11 April) saw an increase to 5,625 cases, including 3,087 from the atolls and 2,538 from Malé. In week 16 (12–18 April), cases rose further to 5,682, with 3,225 reported from the atolls and 2,456 from Malé.
Overall, the atolls accounted for 11,792 cases, while Malé recorded 9,894 cases during the four-week period.
The ministry also reported an increase in influenza cases in 2026. Of 1,119 samples tested between January and April, 130 returned positive results.
Monthly figures show 99 positive cases in January from 791 tests, eight positives in February from 134 tests, five positives in March from 105 tests, and 18 positives in April from 89 tests.
The Ministry of Health has urged the public to take preventive measures against respiratory illnesses, including thorough handwashing with soap or the use of hand sanitiser, and covering the nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
It also advised individuals to seek medical attention if fever and cold symptoms persist for more than three days.
