A mass mosquito inspection was carried out across the Greater Malé area, including Thilafushi and Gulhifalhu, with 308 locations inspected as part of efforts to control mosquito populations and eliminate breeding sites.

The operation, conducted from 19 to 23 April, aimed to reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases by identifying and destroying breeding grounds.

According to the Health Protection Agency (HPA), the initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Maldivian Red Crescent, Hulhumalé Hospital, Villimalé Hospital and municipal service providers.

During the inspections, larvae and breeding sites were commonly found in water tanks, construction materials, tyres and plastic bottles.

Authorities said breeding sites were identified in 153 locations in Malé, 83 in Hulhumalé, 59 in Vilimalé, 12 in Thilafushi and one in Gulhifalhu. All identified sites were subsequently destroyed or made uninhabitable for mosquitoes.

Officials said the inspections form part of ongoing efforts to curb mosquito-borne diseases and urged the public to eliminate standing water in their surroundings.
