The government has announced that a new edition of the Maaranga Market will open in Maafushi on 10 May as part of efforts to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises.
The market is a joint initiative by the Maafushi Council, Local Authority Company Limited and Business Centre Corporation. It has been developed as a platform for local entrepreneurs to market and sell their products.
Officials expect the initiative to contribute to economic activity in Maafushi, which is widely regarded as one of the country’s key local tourism destinations.
The programme was launched in April with 12 kiosks featuring traditional Maldivian food and locally produced handicrafts. Participants involved in the initial phase described the market as an opportunity to increase business visibility and expand commercial activities.
A larger edition of the market is scheduled to begin on 10 May in conjunction with Children’s Day celebrations. According to Business Centre Corporation Managing Director Ibrahim Ziyau Mohamed, the event is intended to create additional opportunities for businesses by linking the programme with a national celebration.
Organisers have stated that additional kiosks may be introduced if demand from vendors exceeds the current capacity planned for the May event. Efforts are also underway to encourage broader participation from businesses through activities connected to the Children’s Day programme.
