The Minister of Arts, Culture and Heritage Heena Waleed has said that efforts are ongoing to complete restoration and development projects in three islands of Haa Alif Atoll by this year’s National Day, as part of a national project to preserve and develop heritage sites associated with Sultan Al-Ghazi (Bodu Thakurufaanu).
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Heena Waleed said the first phase of the project focuses on Utheemu, Thakandhoo and Baarah in Haa Alifu Atoll. She confirmed that work has already started on all three islands.
In Utheemu, she said plans include the development of a “Story Forest Park” in the Kanduvalu area, restoration of the Kanduvalu Mosque and surrounding heritage sites, and renovation of the Utheemu Ganduvaru (palace).
She also said a memorial gate dedicated to Bodu Thakurufaanu and a senior citizens’ park will be developed in the Utheemu harbour area. The minister said the government aims to complete and inaugurate the projects by National Day.
“These projects have now resumed at a fast pace, and they will be completed and inaugurated by the time this year’s National Day arrives,” she said.
In Thakandhoo, Heena said plans include the renovation and development of traditional coral stone structures, the veyo (traditional bathing area), and the cemetery. She added that work is also underway to finalise plans for a memorial centre dedicated to Ali Thakurufaanu, with preparations in progress to begin construction.
She further said significant development work is planned for Baarah, with preparations ongoing to begin implementation.
The government said it continues to work to preserve ancient Maldivian heritage sites for future generations, including through international cooperation where required.
The projects across the three islands are being carried out in collaboration with the Road Development Corporation.
