Three candidates have submitted their names to contest the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) chairperson election.

The MDP said its internal elections committee reviewed the applications and confirmed that the candidates met the requirements set out in announcement number MDP/2026/11, published on 22 April 2026. The committee also sequenced the candidates in accordance with Article 15 of the party’s Election Regulations.

The election is scheduled to take place on 12 June 2026.

The candidates are:

  • Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) – G. Kenereege, Malé
  • Ibrahim Mohamed (Wardu) – Hudhuvilaage, L. Fonadhoo
  • Meekail Ahmed Naseem – G. Barosa, Malé

The MDP issued the announcement for public information.

Former President Mohamed Nasheed and Meekail Ahmed Naseem have both been actively campaigning for the position, presenting competing agendas for party leadership.

Nasheed’s campaign, titled “Big Change”, focuses on broad reforms he says are needed in the Maldives, which he argues can be achieved with the MDP in government.

Meekail has campaigned on restoring trust between the party and its general membership, positioning his candidacy around internal party renewal and confidence-building.

Additionally, the MDP has established a Complaints Committee for the election and said that any complaints relating to the process can be submitted via the Google form provided in the announcement or by contacting 7219637.
