The Ministry of Urban Development has announced that Sultan Park will be closed to the public from 18:00 each day as additional renovation works begin this week.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the ministry said the temporary daily closure is necessary to facilitate ongoing development activities at the park. The renovation project officially commenced in February.
Public concern has grown in recent years over the deteriorating condition of public spaces in Malé, including Sultan Park and Rasfannu.
Last February, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu acknowledged concerns regarding the state of both locations and pledged to restore and improve them.
Responsibility for the development of Sultan Park was transferred from the Malé City Council to the Ministry of Urban Development on 19 February last year. The council stated at the time that the handover was made to allow renovation preparations to proceed.
The government had previously stated that renovation works at Sultan Park would be completed and the park reopened by Eid.
President Muizzu has also stated that the redevelopment of Sultan Park will aim to preserve local identity while incorporating modern technology into the space.
