The documents required by the Male’ City Council to register residents living in flats developed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) will be made available through the corporation’s online portal from Wednesday, according to FDC Managing Director Hamdhaan Shakeel.
The issue was raised in Parliament on Tuesday by Housing Minister Dr Abdullah Muthalib, who said residents of the FDC flats remain unregistered because the council has refused to process their applications.
Responding to a question from MDP MP Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudu), the minister said residential registration is completed only after flat owners settle their payments. He described the council’s refusal to register residents as harassment without any legal basis and said the Housing Ministry had instructed the council to register residents living in Male’.
Kudu has also written to Male’ City Mayor Adam Azim, urging the council to work with the Housing Ministry to resolve the matter.
Speaking to Sun on Tuesday, Hamdhaan said he had arranged a meeting with the council to understand the reasons behind the refusal to register residents.
He said the Housing Ministry would already have informed the council that there were no issues preventing registration and added that there was no reason for the council to withhold the service.
Hamdhaan also said FDC had not received any communication from the council regarding the refusal to register residents, apart from a letter sent by the Housing Ministry.
In a video shared on FDC’s official X account on Wednesday, Hamdhaan said he had first discussed citizenship registration for flat recipients with the council last August and had again requested a meeting last week to clarify the difficulties cited by the council.
He said the required documents for residents to complete their registration would now be accessible online, removing the need to submit physical paperwork.
Hamdhaan said the new arrangement would remove administrative obstacles faced by residents seeking to register their residency in FDC flats.
