An expatriate who sustained critical injuries in a fire on a fuel boat in F. Feeali harbour has died while undergoing treatment, authorities have confirmed.

The individual, who suffered severe burns in the 9 April incident, passed away on 4 May, according to the police. His body was repatriated to his home country the following day.

The fire broke out on a fuel boat docked at Feeali harbour, injuring two people, according to the Maldives Police Service (MPS). The deceased had initially been treated at Feeali Health Centre before being transferred for further care.

A second individual, who was initially reported missing during the incident, was later found alive on a drifting pallet by a passing supply vessel at around 10:15am on the same day. That person was subsequently taken for treatment at Gan Regional Hospital in Laamu Atoll.

Police said the blaze caused extensive damage, spreading from the fuel boat to two additional vessels and two dinghies in the harbour.

Video footage from the scene at the time showed the fire rapidly engulfing nearby structures, including an ice plant located close to the dock.

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) later confirmed that its 25-ton ice plant facility at Feeali harbour, which had been operational since September 2025, was destroyed in the fire. The facility, situated approximately 15 feet from the fuel boat, was burnt beyond use.

Authorities responded to the incident and worked to contain the blaze. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
