A new public beach and swimming area named “Veshi Fannu” has been officially opened in Eydhafushi following a development project carried out by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company on the initiative of the Eydhafushi Council.

The project includes a designated swimming area and a public square intended for community use.

The facility was officially inaugurated during a ceremony held on May 9 by Member of Parliament Ahmed Saleem, MTCC Deputy Managing Director Mohamed Jamsheed and Eydhafushi Council President Mohamed Fathih.

According to the council president, the project cost approximately USD 324,255.

He stated that Eydhafushi had lacked a proper beach and swimming area since land reclamation works were carried out on the island in 2014. The project was initiated to improve the quality of life for residents and restore access to a safe public beach area.

The council also noted that earlier administrations had included the project in previous land use plans in response to longstanding public concerns regarding the absence of a swimming area, particularly among senior citizens.

According to the council, the area is already being widely used by residents of different age groups and is expected to provide a safer environment for swimming and recreation.

The development works included dredging 15,914 cubic metres for the swimming area, constructing 160 metres of geobag revetment, 60 metres of rock boulder breakwater, and 70 metres of groyne protection structures.
