The Maldives Zakat House has reported a significant increase in Zakat Al-Mal disbursements for April 2026, with total spending reaching MVR 3.8 million, up from MVR 2.8 million in April 2025 — an increase of approximately 34.8 per cent.

According to statistics released for the month, the largest share of funds continued to be allocated to support for the poor and needy, alongside educational assistance, Quranic programmes, and broader community welfare initiatives.

Disbursement under the poor and needy category rose to MVR 1.4 million in April 2026, compared to MVR 1.2 million in the same period last year. Within this category, assistance for basic necessities increased significantly from MVR 42,500 to MVR 182,731, while medical assistance rose from MVR 1.1 million to MVR 1.3 million.

Spending under the Aamil category, which covers administrative costs and salaries related to Zakat operations, declined sharply by nearly 60 per cent — falling from MVR 483,077.82 in April 2025 to MVR 195,003.79 in April 2026.

The most notable growth was recorded under the Fi Sabilillah category, which rose from MVR 1.1 million to MVR 2.2 million. The increase was driven by expanded Islamic education and Quranic development initiatives, including MVR 290,274.76 for higher education assistance, MVR 1 million for Quran memorisation and related programmes, and MVR 782,992.50 for the construction of Quran centres across atolls.

No disbursement was recorded under the Ibn Al-Sabeel (Wayfarer) category in April 2026, compared to MVR 62,052 allocated in April 2025 for stranded travellers. The Zakat House also reported total Zakat Al-Mal collections of MVR 5.4 million for April 2026. While this marked a 53.8 per cent decrease compared to the previous month, collections were 8.9 per cent higher year-on-year when compared with April 2025.
