25 Rescued After Speedboat Begins Sinking Amid Rough Weather
MET office and MPS has previously warned the seafarers to take precautionary measures before travelling to island during the current stormy period.
Twenty-five people were safely evacuated after a speedboat travelling from Malé to AA. Thoddoo began taking in water and sinking yesterday evening amid rough weather conditions affecting the Maldives.
According to the Maldives Police Service Marine Police, the vessel, identified as “Relax Aisha”, encountered difficulties at around 5:30 p.m. while travelling to Thoddoo.
Police said all passengers aboard the vessel were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
The incident occurred as the Maldives experiences worsening weather conditions linked to the southwest monsoon.
In a weather update issued on Thursday, the Maldives Meteorological Service said active monsoon conditions had brought rain and occasional heavy showers to central and northern atolls.
The Met Office warned that active weather conditions are expected to continue, with strong winds, very rough seas and occasional heavy showers and thunderstorms likely across northern and central atolls.
Authorities advised mariners, particularly those travelling in northern and central regions, to monitor weather updates closely and take necessary precautions.
Marine Police also urged the public to pay close attention to safety measures while travelling by sea during the current weather conditions.
The Maldives is currently experiencing the southwest monsoon season, which typically runs from May to November. The Met Office previously announced that this year’s southwest monsoon began in the southern region on 8 May before gradually spreading across the country.
The warning by authorities comes ahead of the extended public holiday declared by the government for Eid celebrations this week, during which increased inter-island travel is expected. Authorities advised travellers planning journeys during the holiday period to remain cautious and monitor weather conditions before departure.
