Maldives Pledges Stronger Commonwealth Engagement Following London Talks
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Iirthisham Adam, has reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its relationship with the Commonwealth and expanding cooperation in areas of shared interest following talks with Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey in London.
The meeting took place at Marlborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth in the United Kingdom, as part of the Maldives’ ongoing diplomatic engagement with international partners.
During the discussions, Minister Iirthisham highlighted the Maldives’ commitment to further deepening ties with the Commonwealth and enhancing collaboration on key priorities. She described the meeting as an important step in maintaining and advancing international partnerships.
In a statement shared on social media following the meeting, Secretary-General Botchwey recognised the Maldives’ active role within the Commonwealth, particularly its advocacy for the interests of small states and island nations.
The Secretary-General also welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Foreign Minister and expressed confidence that the discussions would help further strengthen relations between the Commonwealth and the Maldives.
The Commonwealth is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 56 member countries. Since rejoining the organisation in 2020, the Maldives has worked with the Commonwealth across a range of sectors, including governance, climate action, sustainable development and support for small island developing states.
The Maldives has continued to advocate for issues affecting vulnerable island nations on international platforms, with climate resilience, sustainable development and ocean protection remaining key priorities of its foreign policy agenda.
