Nazim’s Removal Is a Party Matter, says the President, Declines Explaining During Press Conference
Former deputy speaker Nazim shaking hands with president Muizzu at the presidential address held on 5 February.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu declined to disclose the reasons behind the removal of Dhiggaru MP Ahmed Nazim from his position as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, deflecting a question asked by a journalist, stating that such matters are fit for a party rally podium.
The issue was raised during a press conference at the President’s Office today, where RaajjeTV journalist Laisha Ahmed, referred to Muizzu’s previous statements that only individuals of high integrity and those who commanded his full confidence would be appointed to positions within the government and the ruling party.
The journalist asked whether the ruling People’s National Congress had initiated the process to remove Nazim because it had lost confidence in him and, if so, what had led to that decision.
Muizzu declined to answer the question directly.
Instead, he said he would respond to the matter from a party platform, noting that he was not currently speaking from a PNC platform.
The position of Deputy Speaker became vacant after Nazim resigned ahead of a no-confidence vote scheduled in Parliament.
The motion had been submitted by the ruling party People’s National Congress (PNC), which alleged that Nazim had acted according to a particular political ideology and sought to undermine the interests of Parliament.
Nazim has denied the allegations.
Following his resignation, Ahmed Saleem, commonly known as Redwave Saleem, was elected Deputy Speaker.
Saleem secured 62 votes in the parliamentary vote, defeating Vikaradhoo MP Hussain Ziyad, known as Fittey, who received 10 votes.
A four-term parliamentarian, Saleem is regarded as one of the most experienced members of the current People’s Majlis and has previously held several parliamentary positions.
