A dedicated Calm Room has been opened at Terminal 1 of Velana International Airport to provide support for passengers with non-visible disabilities, as part of efforts to improve accessibility and passenger services.
The facility was established by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) under its social responsibility programme and aims to create a more inclusive airport environment for travellers requiring additional support.
The Calm Room was inaugurated by Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed at a ceremony attended by representatives from the Maldives Autism Association, Autism Care Maldives and MACL.
Designed under MACL’s “BOLI” programme, the facility draws inspiration from similar accessibility initiatives implemented at airports around the world. The room provides a quiet and sensory-friendly environment intended to help reduce stress and discomfort that some passengers may experience while travelling through the airport.
The facility is equipped with sensory tools and activities designed to help users feel more comfortable. Parents or guardians accompanying eligible passengers are also permitted to remain in the room during its use.
Passengers who qualify for the service will receive a special card and lanyard to enable easier identification and facilitate quicker assistance while moving through the airport.
MACL stated that the initiative forms part of its wider efforts to make Velana International Airport more accessible, inclusive and passenger-friendly for all travellers.
