Mauroof Jameel, Architect and Artist, Maldives Resort Architecture Exhibition | MV+ People
“Cultural heritage is not ours to own. It was entrusted to us by past generations, and it is our responsibility to safeguard it for those who come after us. We have no right to erase it, only a duty to preserve and carry it forward,” says Mauroof Jameel.
For decades, Mauroof Jameel has observed the transformation of the Maldives through the lens of architecture. As an architect, illustrator, and independent scholar, his work has been dedicated not only to designing spaces but also to documenting the stories, ideas, and cultural influences that shape them.
His latest exhibition, Maldivian Resort Architecture: Identity, Memory & Legacy, brings that passion to the forefront. Developed in collaboration with a team of architects, researchers, and technical experts, the exhibition combines hand-drawn illustrations, archival research, interviews, and visual reconstructions to chronicle the development of Maldivian resort architecture over the past five decades, revealing how island resorts evolved from simple beginnings into globally recognised symbols of luxury and design.
Expanding on themes explored in his book Maldivian Resort Architecture: 50 Years of Island Resorts, the exhibition examines five distinct periods in resort development, highlighting the architectural innovations, changing aesthetics, and cultural narratives that defined each era.
More than a celebration of tourism, the exhibition encourages visitors to view resort architecture as an important part of the nation’s cultural identity. By documenting structures and spaces that have disappeared or been transformed over time, Mauroof’s work preserves a valuable record of a heritage that continues to shape how the Maldives is experienced and remembered around the world.
