The Housing Development Corporation (HDC) on Wednesday officially handed over the land allocated for the construction of the Maldives’ largest mosque to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.

The land handover agreement was signed by Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed on behalf of the ministry and HDC Managing Director Brigadier General (Retired) Ali Zuhair on behalf of the corporation.

The mosque is planned for development in the area connecting Hulhumalé Phase II and Phase III and is expected to become one of the country’s largest religious infrastructure projects.

According to the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the development will be designed as a multi-purpose complex. In addition to the main prayer hall, the facility will include a Quran Museum and a range of supporting amenities.

The ministry has already signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi Arabia’s Al-Rajhi Company to secure financing for the project.

The construction of the mosque was announced by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as one of the key pledges outlined in his presidential address. The government has stated that it aims to begin physical work on the project in conjunction with the 900th anniversary of the Maldives’ conversion to Islam.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is currently working towards commencing construction in September this year.
