Maldive Gas has increased the refill prices of its 22kg and 45kg cooking gas cylinders for commercial customers, introducing significant price hikes for businesses that rely on the larger cylinders.

The state-owned company confirmed that the revised prices apply specifically to commercial customers. Under the new pricing structure, the cost of refilling a 45kg cylinder has risen from MVR 1,170 to MVR 1,345.50. The refill price of a 22kg cylinder has also increased from MVR 400 to MVR 500.

Maldive Gas, a subsidiary of the State Trading Organization (STO), has not publicly disclosed the reasons behind the latest price adjustments.

The company faced operational challenges earlier this year when supply disruptions in February led to the temporary distribution of 7kg cylinders in place of the standard 10kg cylinders. Although the supply issue was later resolved, customers reported significant delays in delivery services during the period. Normal operations for both Maldive Gas and Villa Gas resumed approximately two weeks later.

The company has also been the subject of scrutiny in recent months following allegations of corruption. In April, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced an investigation into an advance payment of approximately USD 250,000 that was reported missing. The payment formed part of an USD 800,000 gas shipment ordered in October 2024.

No further information has been released regarding the status or outcome of the ACC investigation.
