Authorities Launch Search Operation at Maafushi Prison

The Maldives Correctional Service and Maldives Police Service have launched a search operation at Maafushi Prison.

In a statement issued today, the Correctional Service said the operation was being conducted jointly with the police. Authorities did not disclose further details about the scope or purpose of the search.

Search operations have previously been carried out at Maafushi Prison amid concerns over contraband being smuggled into the facility and reports of inmates operating scam networks from inside the prison.

The latest operation comes as authorities continue efforts to strengthen prison security and screening procedures.

Last week, officials installed a baggage screening machine at Maafushi Prison for the first time. The machine is now being used to inspect items brought into the facility by visitors and others entering the prison.

Earlier this year, authorities also introduced a body scanning machine at the prison. The scanner was installed in February and became operational in April amid growing concerns over the smuggling of mobile phones and other prohibited items into the facility.

Neither the Correctional Service nor the police have announced whether the current operation is linked to any specific investigation.
