The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced the handover of drainage pumps donated by the Japanese government to 18 islands across the Maldives under the first phase of the Economic and Social Development Project.

The initiative is aimed at strengthening the country’s resilience to climate change and reducing the impact of flooding, which has become an increasing concern due to heavy rainfall and rising sea levels.

Under the first phase of the project, 40 high-capacity drainage and irrigation pumps have been brought to the Maldives. The equipment is being distributed among 20 islands, with each island receiving two pumps along with supporting equipment, including control panels, spare parts and protective housings.

According to the NDMA, pumps have already been delivered to 18 of the targeted islands. The remaining two islands, Kudarikilu and Maafaru, are expected to receive their equipment in the coming days.

The authority stated that the pump distribution forms part of a broader national effort to improve flood mitigation and disaster preparedness. Stormwater management and drainage systems are being developed in flood-prone areas, with completed systems already operating in Malé and several major islands.

The NDMA also noted that efforts are underway to strengthen early warning systems across the country, with upgrades designed to provide faster and more accurate alerts ahead of severe weather events.
