The Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development has announced that contracts for the construction of 1,000 new housing units will be finalised this week, as part of the government’s wider efforts to address the country’s housing shortage.
Speaking on PSM News’ Raajje Miadhu programme, State Minister for Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Ahmed Nazim Mohamed said the project would be awarded to five fully Maldivian-owned companies. Each company will be responsible for developing 200 housing units.
According to the ministry, each contractor’s allocation will include 60 two-bedroom apartments and 140 three-bedroom apartments. The housing units are planned for Hulhumalé Phase II and are intended to provide larger living spaces than previous social housing developments in the Maldives.
The two-bedroom apartments will have a floor area of 700 square feet, while the three-bedroom units will exceed 950 square feet. The ministry stated that both the interior finishes and shared outdoor spaces will be upgraded compared to earlier housing projects.
The 1,000-unit development forms part of a broader national housing programme being implemented across the Greater Malé region and the atolls. The ministry said several projects are currently at different stages of development.
In Hulhumalé Phase I, three plots have already been allocated to local companies, while another plot has been awarded to a Maldivian firm in Villimalé. The ministry also noted that two Chinese companies have been granted land in Hulhumalé Phase II, where construction is expected to commence once design work is completed and the required permits are obtained.
