Aishath Shiruhana, Diabetes Society of Maldives Chairperson and CEO | MV+ Exclusive
“Without doing anything drastic, simply by making small lifestyle changes, we can significantly reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases in the Maldives, especially conditions like diabetes. According to our latest studies, 65% of the population is at high risk. Therefore, if we do not deal with this issue right now, everyone will end up suffering from non-communicable diseases. That is why a massive effort needs to be made to reduce these risks and bring about lifestyle changes,” says Shiruhana.
In this interview, Aishath Shiruhana, Chairperson and CEO of the Diabetes Society of Maldives, reflects on the organization’s journey since its establishment on 26 April 2000, as well as its findings on diabetes and lifestyle-related risk factors from a nationwide screening programme conducted in 2022 and published in 2023. She discusses the challenges of managing a self-funded NGO, including securing essential supplies for people living with diabetes and meeting high administrative costs with limited government support.
Shiruhana also highlights a major public health concern: many individuals remain unaware that they have diabetes and are often reluctant to undergo screening.
She further details the society’s growth over the years and its significant contributions to raising awareness and advocating for better diabetes prevention and care. Through its island-wide screening initiatives, community outreach programmes, and research efforts, including a case study on diabetes and related risk factors, the organisation has played a vital role in improving public health across the Maldives. Looking ahead, Shiruhana remains committed to advancing its mission and expanding its impact as the organization continues to grow.
