MV+ News Desk | June 28, 2026
With two new cases reported last week, the total number of measles cases recorded across the Maldives has risen to 24.

The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has begun administering the measles-rubella (MR) vaccine to children under the age of 18 and frontline healthcare workers yesterday, as part of efforts to contain the re-emergence of measles in the Maldives.

The HPA announced that the vaccination campaign will be carried out in phases. The first phase of the campaign prioritises healthcare workers and children under the age of 18, with vaccinations scheduled to be carried out starting yesterday until Tuesday at the Urban Health Care Clinic in Maafannu, Hulhumalé Hospital, Senahiya and Villingili Hospital. In the atolls, vaccination dates and times will be announced by the health centre on each island.

The campaign comes after the HPA reported two new measles cases over the past week. According to the agency’s latest update, most confirmed cases have been among people aged 18 and above.

With two new cases reported last week, the total number of measles cases recorded across the Maldives has risen to 24. Health authorities have identified 543 contacts linked to confirmed cases, with 173 people currently under monitoring. A total of 220 contacts have already received the MR vaccine, while 1,573 frontline healthcare workers have also been vaccinated as part of the outbreak response.

Measles had previously been eliminated in the Maldives through sustained immunisation efforts. The HPA has urged eligible individuals to receive the vaccine to help prevent further transmission and protect those at higher risk of infection.
