President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that applicants selected for flats under ongoing government housing projects will be identified and notified this year.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office today, he described housing provision as the administration’s largest pledge and said the process is being handled with close attention, given its importance to thousands of citizens.

He said that housing allocations under the current administration would not be influenced by personal or family connections, and would instead be granted strictly on the basis of eligibility and entitlement. He added that both land plots and flats would be distributed as a matter of right to those who qualify under the established criteria.

The President said applications for flats will be thoroughly verified, and allocations will be made based on points under established guidelines. He added that the list of recipients will be made public this year, with details of allocations for each individual clearly disclosed. He also said land plot recipients will be notified within the same timeframe.

On construction progress in Malé, he said foundation work for most housing towers is expected to begin in July, adding that the government expects completion of all Malé-area flats around May to July 2028.

Regarding land allocation, he said plots will be issued following the completion of land reclamation works in Rasmalé, which he said is around 60 per cent complete. He noted that work had slowed slightly due to fuel price increases but said preparations are underway to resume operations using two dredgers, with the aim of completing the remaining works before the end of the year.

A total of 58,505 applications have been submitted under the housing scheme, including 35,930 for flats and 22,575 for land plots.
