Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has reported that more than 335 tonnes of cargo were exported from the Maldives through the sea-to-air cargo service in June, according to its latest statistics.
The sea-to-air cargo service enables goods arriving in the Maldives by sea to be transshipped and transported by air to destinations in other countries.
According to MPL, more than 335 tonnes of cargo, equivalent to 65 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), were exported to seven countries during June using four international airlines.
The airlines used for the shipments were Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Saudia and Emirates.
The volume of cargo handled through the service increased by 102 per cent compared with May, when 162 tonnes of cargo were exported.
The sea-to-air cargo service is jointly operated by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) and Maldives Ports Limited. The service was launched in May 2024 as part of efforts to expand the country’s logistics and transshipment capabilities.
Sea-to-air cargo is widely used internationally as an efficient logistics solution that combines the lower cost of sea freight with the speed of air transport. The government has previously stated that the Maldives is well positioned to expand the sector due to the large number of international airlines operating in the country, creating further opportunities for growth in cargo and logistics services.
