No Roadside Parking on Upgraded Boduthakurufaanu Magu, Says President Muizzu

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that roadside parking will no longer be permitted on the section of Boduthakurufaanu Magu that is nearing completion under the ongoing road modernisation project.

Speaking during the The Pulse podcast, the President said the upgraded stretch of the road is expected to open next week and will significantly improve traffic flow. He said the roadside parking previously available between Nasandhura and Izzuddin Jetty will be removed once the road is opened.

Instead, motorists will be required to use a newly reclaimed parking area developed as part of the project. According to the President, the new parking zone will have space for around 500 motorcycles.

He said the removal of roadside parking would help ensure smoother traffic movement along the outer road. The redevelopment also includes plans to plant trees on both sides of the road to improve the surrounding environment for motorists and pedestrians.

The President said work will begin on the next phase of the project after the current section is completed. The remaining stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu, from the Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) area to Rasfannu, will be reconstructed as part of the road upgrade programme.

He described the section as the most deteriorated part of the outer road and said the redevelopment would improve access to the market area, commercial district and nearby neighbourhoods.

Malé continues to experience heavy traffic congestion due to the high number of vehicles and limited parking capacity. As part of broader efforts to address the issue, the President said construction of two multi-storey parking buildings in the capital will begin this year.

Last week, the government also established a dedicated office to oversee efforts to resolve traffic and mobility issues in Malé.
