MP Alleges Pistols Present at Site of USD 790m Ayla Township Project

MDP MP for Hulhumalé South Dr. Ahmed Shamheed has claimed that pistols are present at the site of the USD 790 million Project Ayla township being developed by Crystal Holdings in Noonu Atoll.

Speaking on Adhadhu’s Etherefuh programme, Shamheed said a Noonu Atoll MP had raised the claim during a joint meeting of the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee and Economic Affairs Committee.

He said the allegations surrounding the project could be referred to investigative authorities, noting that the claims had been made by MPs during a parliamentary committee meeting.

Shamheed also claimed that cigarettes were readily available at the site.

Project Ayla, which is scheduled for completion in 2028, is planned to include luxury residential units, an ultra-luxury resort and a marina. The project also includes plans for an international-standard healthcare facility and a school specialising in hospitality and leadership.

The project has also faced scrutiny over provisions that critics say could allow foreign investors to exercise control over certain commercial aspects of the township, potentially overriding some services and activities that are otherwise subject to Maldivian regulations, including banking and other commercial services.
