Police Arrest Suspect Over MVR 10,000 Hulhumalé Robbery, Remanded for 10 Days

A Maldivian has been remanded in custody for 10 days after police arrested him over the alleged robbery of a wallet containing MVR 10,000 from a foreigner in Hulhumalé.

According to the police, the robbery was reported to police at around 11:25 pm on Sunday after two individuals on a motorcycle allegedly took the wallet from the foreigner while he was riding a bicycle near FW Residence in Hulhumalé Phase 1.

Hulhumalé Response & Patrol and the Investigation Department launched an investigation following the report.

Police said CCTV footage helped investigators locate the motorcycle allegedly used in the robbery. Officers arrested Ijaaz Naseer, 40, of Athamaage/Gadhdhoo, Vaadhoo, in connection with the case.

Police subsequently identified the second suspect and arrested the individual under a court order on July 29. The second suspect has since been released from police custody. The police did not provide any reasons for the second suspect’s release, nor disclose any information about the person. 

When Naseer was presented before court for a remand hearing, the court ordered him to remain in custody for 10 days, said the police. 

Police said the wallet and the MVR 10,000 allegedly stolen from the foreigner have been recovered. 

The investigation is ongoing.
