MDP to Protest Rising Cost of Living on August 12

The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) will hold a protest in Malé on August 12 over the rising cost of living and increasing prices of essential goods.
The protest, titled “Dhathivejje”, referring to the financial difficulties faced by people, will begin at 4:30 PM outside the Social Centre.

MDP Chairperson Mohamed Nasheed announced the protest today in a post on X, saying the prices of goods in the market have become unaffordable, particularly essential items used in everyday life.

Nasheed listed 10 items whose prices he said had become difficult for people to afford, including Nescafé coffee, basmati rice, powdered milk for children, cucumber, various meat products and fuel.
The announcement follows criticism by Nasheed last week of the People’s National Congress (PNC) administration and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu over the rising cost of living.
Speaking at a party rally, Nasheed attributed rising prices to dollar shortages and high inflation, and accused the government of failing to secure sufficient foreign currency. He also criticised the administration’s debt repayment strategy.
Nasheed further said congestion at Malé Commercial Port was increasing demurrage and freight costs, adding to inflation. He described the country’s economic direction as a “dark trajectory” and said the government lacked a clear plan to change course.
