Velana International Airport (VIA) recorded its highest-ever monthly volume of outbound transshipment cargo in July 2026, according to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The facility processed more than 2,000 tonnes of freight, exceeding all previous monthly records at the Maldivian airport. This total comprises cargo transported via both air-to-air and sea-to-air transfer operations.

The airport’s sea-to-air transfer service was a primary driver of this growth. During July, this specific sector handled 621 tonnes of cargo, marking its highest monthly volume since the service was introduced. The sea-to-air model involves receiving maritime freight and transferring it directly to outbound aircraft for onward distribution.

The MACL stated that the July figures demonstrate the continued expansion of the airport’s transshipment operations. The increase in overall tonnage aligns with the operator’s ongoing initiatives to increase cargo handling capacity and improve processing efficiency to meet international demand.

The operation provides global markets across Asia, Europe, and other regions with an efficient transit route for international freight.
