Due to public complains, the online media “Dhenme” has drawn the attention of the Maldives Media Council (MMC) due to its publication of headlines seen as inappropriate.
Aiming to address these concerns, the Complaints Committee of the MMC has launched an investigation into the news articles and headlines that have been disseminated by the publication.
However, it has come to light that the newspaper in question is not officially registered with the Ministry of Home Affairs. This lack of registration has led to difficulties in ascertaining the identity of the newspaper’s owner and those accountable for its content.
The MMC has issued a call to the public, urging them to come forward with any information they may possess regarding the newspaper in question. Additionally, the Council has advised against sharing or engaging with the content featured in the newspaper.
With the objective of addressing this situation, the council is attempting to present the matter to the appropriate authorities for consideration.
Central to the discussion is the principle of press freedom, which is safeguarded by Article 28 of the Constitution.
