The Manifesto of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), titled ‘Ufaaveri Amaan Raajje’ has encompassed a specific proportion of the state budget intended for media outlets that align with predetermined criteria.
This proposal within the manifesto includes tasking Maldives Media Council with implementing mechanisms to address issues related to media self-governance and solving registration procedure issues. The responsibilities of MMC would also extend to ensuring the accuracy, and verification of information disseminated to the public by media entities.
This proposed financial allocation is contingent upon media organisations meeting specific criteria set forth by the law. The aim behind this provision is to reduce the financial reliance of media outlets on other parties, and promote a more equitable distribution of resources. MDP commits to establishing an internationally aligned rating system to ensure fair and unbiased distribution of funds.
Furthermore, the manifesto underscores the importance of legal protection and support for content creators operating within the Maldives streaming services, podcasting, and other online media platforms.
MDP also intends to foster opportunities for training and education in community-based journalism, freelance reporting, and digital content creation.
Additionally, the manifesto underscores the commitment to making state media’s news and information accessible to individuals with disabilities. It also outlines plans for journalist training programs, aiming to nurture a new generation of media professionals. Diverse training opportunities within the media sector are proposed to encourage careers in journalism.
