Candidates to Begin Signing Voters Lists from Tomorrow

The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has informed that, starting tomorrow until 27th, candidates will have the opportunity to sign the voters list in preparation for the upcoming presidential election.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice Chairman and Spokesperson of ECM, revealed that ECM officials are currently engaged in the process of signing the voters list. Once this initial stage is concluded, candidates will then undertake the task of adding their signatures to the list.

As stipulated by the electoral guidelines established subsequent to the nullification of the first round of the 2013 presidential election by the Supreme Court, candidates are required to formally sign the voters list prior to each election. 

A total of 282,395 individuals are eligible to participate in the upcoming presidential election, with over 27,000 new voters also meeting the eligibility criteria to cast their votes in this election.

In anticipation of this year’s presidential election, plans are underway to establish a network of 574 polling stations across five countries.

The initial round of voting is scheduled for September 9. A total of eight candidates will be contending for the esteemed presidential position in this year’s election.
