The presidential candidate representing the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), the incumbent President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, has put forward a proposition in their manifesto to alter the composition of the Parliament.
However, last month, Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has declared that the count of Parliament seats will be raised for the forthcoming Parliamentary term. As stipulated by the Constitution, Members of Parliament are elected to represent every 5,000 individuals, prompting necessary adjustments as the population expands.

Past endeavors to modify the Constitution with the intention of limiting the number of members have not gained approval within the parliament.
Under the umbrella of its ‘Good Governance’ policy, the MDP manifesto strives to instigate constitutional amendments aimed at discontinuing the routine increase of Parliament members every five years.
This call for change is not exclusive to the MDP, as various other candidates participating in the upcoming presidential election have also pledged similar adjustments.
