Legal Aid Service Statistics (2014-2019)
Over the past six years, the Family Legal Clinic has made a profound impact on the lives of individuals in need, offering essential legal aid services in the field of family law and the prevention of domestic violence. The statistical overview below sheds light on the scope and reach of these services:
- People Served: A total of 1,106 individuals have benefitted from the clinic’s pro bono legal services. Among these, 919 were female and 187 were male.
- Consultations: The clinic facilitated 1,572 consultations during this period. Notably, 408 of these consultations were conducted face to face, while 187 took place online, and 977 were carried out through teleconsultation.
- Cases Presented in Court: The dedication of the Family Legal Clinic extended to representing clients in legal proceedings, with 160 cases being presented in court.
Types of Cases Handled
The clinic addressed a diverse range of cases, each with its own unique complexities. The following categorization offers insight into the spectrum of issues tackled by the Family Legal Clinic:
- Domestic Violence: 223 cases involving domestic violence were taken up, highlighting the clinic’s commitment to addressing this pressing societal concern.
- Divorce: 204 divorce cases were managed, contributing to the provision of clarity and resolution in often emotionally charged situations.
- Marriage: 23 cases related to marriage matters were handled, demonstrating the clinic’s comprehensive approach to family law.
- Spousal Maintenance: The clinic assisted with 18 cases related to spousal maintenance, ensuring fair and equitable solutions.
- Child Maintenance: A total of 166 child maintenance cases were addressed, promoting the welfare of children and their guardians.
- Custody: The clinic navigated 190 custody cases, upholding the best interests of minors involved.
- Visitation: Ensuring the rights of parents and children, the clinic managed 181 visitation cases.
- Sexual Harassment: The clinic provided support in 7 cases of sexual harassment, underscoring its dedication to broader legal protection.
- Marriage Registration: 13 cases involving marriage registration were processed, facilitating the legal formalization of relationships.
- Other Cases: Additionally, the clinic undertook 147 cases falling under diverse categories.
Operating as a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the Maldives, the Family Legal Clinic has steadfastly pursued its mission of offering pro bono legal services in family law and the prevention of domestic violence.
