The Election Commission of Maldives (ECM) has notified candidates that the deadline for signing the voters list for the upcoming presidential election, scheduled for next month, is tonight and no further extension will be granted.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice Chairman and Spokesperson of the ECM, emphasised that the opportunity to sign the voters list will cease tonight. Despite the current absence of signatures from the three candidates, no additional time frame will be provided for them to append their names to the list, according to Habeeb’s statement.

A total of 282,395 individuals are eligible to participate in the upcoming presidential election, with over 27,000 new voters also meeting the eligibility criteria to cast their votes in this election.

In anticipation of this year’s presidential election, plans are underway to establish a network of 574 polling stations across five countries.

The initial round of voting is scheduled for September 9. A total of eight candidates will be contending for the esteemed presidential position in this year’s election.
