The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has announced that all the candidates, with the exception of independent candidate Umar Naseer, have appended their signatures to the list of eligible voters.

A total of 282,395 individuals are set to exercise their right to vote in this year’s presidential election. Among them, a substantial contingent of over 27,000 new voters has been identified. According to the ECM, the window for modifying the voters list has now officially closed.

Ismail Habeeb, the Vice-President of the ECM, confirmed that the definitive roster of eligible voters was signed by all the presidential candidates prior to 10:00 pm yesterday. However, notably absent were the signatures of candidates representing the Maldives National Party and The Democrats.

The practice of presidential candidates endorsing the voters list through their signatures was initiated following the 2013 presidential election. This was implemented in accordance with a guideline issued by the Supreme Court during that year.

The upcoming presidential election will feature eight candidates in contention, of whom three are running as independent candidates.
