Former President Abdulla Yameen and People’s National Congress (PNC) presidential candidate Dr. Muizzu have articulated the commitment of the PPM-PNC government to uphold a well-calibrated foreign policy approach.

Central to this approach is the intention to cultivate an amicable relationship with India, positioning it as a neighbouring ally of significance.

Emphasising a departure from exclusivity, the PPM-PNC government will aim to establish an inclusive stance, diverging from the current administration’s exclusive focus on India.

Termed as an “India First” strategy, the envisioned foreign policy underlines the vital role India will play in the Maldives’ diplomatic landscape. However, the current administration is keen on avoiding the pitfalls of an “India Only” approach, opting instead for a more nuanced and balanced perspective.

The core ethos of this approach is rooted in safeguarding Maldivian interests, fostering an environment conducive to fostering closer diplomatic ties with nations across the global spectrum.

This strategic realignment is anticipated to yield a more multifaceted foreign policy orientation, attuned to the intricate dynamics of the modern geopolitical landscape.
